Day 7

It's hard to believe that only 7 days have passed since we left Indiana.  It feels like so much more.

We didn't have set plans for today, so we just threw an idea together this morning during breakfast.

We did some shopping at thrift stores in Palm Springs, got cheap vintage clothing, and then hit the road for the Pacific Coast Highway.

Our plan was to drive up to Santa Barbara, stop as often as we wanted on the way up the coast, and then just relax at the Coast Village Inn for the evening.

The route took us past Los Angeles and over to Highway 1.  LA is just as smoggy as people say it is.  There is a hazy fog that smokes the view of the city and mountains.  Despite the smog you could still see blue sky and the sunshine.

That is until we got to the coast.  We started in Santa Monica, and there was this strange fog everywhere, pretty thick too. We also noticed that the temperature started dropping.

My uncle told us it is called June Gloom. It forms when the ocean waters are cool and the air is warm.

By the time we reached Malibu it had almost rolled away entirely (you can still see traces of it in the photos above).  We got out of the car and walked in the pacific ocean for the first time for both of us.

We reached Santa Barbara and spent the evening exploring the area, and then relaxing.

A lovely low-key day as we approach the end of the trip :)

  1. I love Santa Monica! When you get the time, you'll have to keep going up Rt.1 into Mendocino. So incredibly beautiful up there and there is this oh so fun sea glass site that used to be a dump. I picked up a number of lovely pieces from there.
