We were looking forward to Friday, our day off. We had discussed Malibu Creek State Park before, but this time we were actually going. Thursday night Ashley surprised me with my Christmas present - a pink Camelbak, you know, the back packs with water in them and a long straw/hose that snakes out of the top of the bag and rests on your shoulder, ready to quench your thirst at a moments notice. She bought one for herself as well. At first I thought we didn't hike nearly enough to make these necessary, but I think instead they changed us.. as you will soon see for yourself.
So, back to Malibu Creek SP. We arrived in the late morning and started down the trail. Ashley had found this place online, so we had a goal, something called a 'rock pool' surrounded by what was described as 'towers of volcanic rock'.
First we were on the trail, enjoying the sunshine and playing in weeds and trees.

this particular bush had little white fluffies that swirled around in the wind..like snowflakes |
Malibu Creek SP has been the set for many Hollywood productions. My favorites mentioned were Tarzan, Swiss Family Robinson, and Troop Beverly Hills, among many others.
Ashley and I raced up one step hill, as you can watch below. Ashley went first and her video is on the right, if you feel like watching in order.
The stone that made up our race track was soft and loosely packed, so your foot just slid every time you took a step.
Then we really started hiking.
At one point we had to wade through a creek, not a big deal, except we took our shoes off and the water was freezing!!
We found the rock pool surrounded by huge rocks. There were a lot of rock climbers there and people suspended on ropes.
I had mentioned that there was an adventurous change in us. It must have been a combo of the Camelbaks and seeing all of these climbers. We started following this crazy steep trail up. It continued to get steeper and more challenging, the type of trail that if you stop, you slide back, so the only option is to keep going even though you would really like a break. We had to climb on our hands and feet, using roots and rocks as hand and foot holds.
Finally we reached the top and the view was amazing.
We headed back down, which was slightly harder than the ascent. On the walk back we had huge smiles on our face and were planning on where would go hiking the next time.
A funny thing about the other hikers we saw there.. With exception to the rock climbers, the people we passed were dressed in clothing you may not deem appropriate, i.e jeans, flannel, pretty scarves, and gladiator heels, to name a few. I guess that's what people in Malibu wear hiking..
In the evening we got dressed up and went out to two bars in Studio City. We had debated whether or not we wanted to go, but went anyway. Sadly, we were disappointed. It just wasn't fun. It was crowded and really really dark. You couldn't even see my new shoes..
We didn't stay out more than an hour. This has been my experience a number of times before, I don't really want to go out, but I do hoping I will be surprised by oodles of fun, yet I end up disappointed. My conclusion is that I'd rather go to bed early and get up to do something the next day. Ashley wants to try going out again sometime, but I'm putting up the white flag.
So to you, LA nightlife, thanks, but no thanks. You can keep your glittery blazers and cocktails. Just give me the blue sky and mountains.
Love, Megan
You are the cutest and funniest. I can't wait to come visit and have you kick my butt on the hiking trails.
